I am a bio-optical oceanographer whose research focuses on understanding the interaction of living and non-living particles with light in the ocean, with the aim of improving the interpretation of ocean colour from space. I have been working at PML since 2002, collecting high quality measurements of optical properties in-situ and under laboratory conditions. This work has been used to develop new remote sensing products such as phytoplankton carbon, to improve detection of Harmful Algal Blooms and to improve the parameterisation of light in data assimilation schemes of ocean colour data into coupled physical-biogeochemical models. The results of this analysis have also been published in a range of peer-reviewed scientific journals. I have also played an active role in both securing and managing international grants and projects.

Recent work is focused on coastal waters, using autonomous platforms to collect data for satellite validation at high spatial resolution to improve detection of harmful algal blooms for aquaculture applications.
