Research

Water samples PML carries out useful and timely fundamental, strategic and applied research in the marine environment from the uppermost reaches of estuaries to the open ocean.

To deliver our core research mission we operate a matrix of three core research themes (below). These themes rely heavily on cross-cutting research and development (right) in key areas such as satellite remote sensing, modelling, new technology and social and economic analyses.

Biodiversity and sustainable ecosystems

Alteration and loss in biodiversity could have a detrimental impact upon our oceans. PML’s biodiversity research aims to provide the knowledge, expertise and tools necessary to enable good-practice maintenance of ecosystem processes, the sustainable use of our oceans and appropriate conservation techniques.

Marine biogeochemistry

Increasing atmospheric CO₂ is a very real and concerning problem of the 21st century and the oceans play a vital role in its regulation. The biogeochemistry theme focuses on key microbially mediated processes within the upper ocean, including the transfer of gases and plankton activity.

Environment and health

Sustainable management of the oceans to maintain diversity and the quality of life on Earth has become an increasing area of focus and importance over recent years. PML's strategic research in this area deals with the functioning and health of rich estuarine and coastal environments.
