
Science areas
PML’s research is focused on the interactions between the
marine environment and society in estuarine,
coastal and shelf waters, as well as the upper layers of the global
ocean.
The sustainability of the marine ecosystem as a
climate regulator, food provider, source of renewable energy and
contributor to human health, wellbeing and wealth of human
societies is of major importance. PML’s research provides policy
makers and stakeholders with sound advice for making key
decisions.
Over recent years significant marine legislation,
such as the UK Marine Bill (the UK Marine Science Strategy) and the
EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and key documents, such
as Defra’s current Natural Environment White Paper, have been
developed. PML’s science is aligned to these national and
international policies to help respond to such critical challenges
as dangerous climate change, food sustainability and energy.
