City scientist selected for IPCC

29th June 2010

Dr Carol Turley Dr Carol Turley, Senior Scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), has been selected as a Review Editor for the International Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report, due to be published from the Autumn 2013 to Spring 2014.

The overall IPCC team of over 830 world-leading scientists, selected from approximately 3,000 nominations, will spend the best part of the next 3 years gathering and reviewing scientific evidence on the state of knowledge on climate change; what is understood of human induced climate change, potential impacts of climate change and options for mitigation and adaptation.

Dr Turley will be working as a Review Editor for Working Group II, which focuses on the impacts of and adaptation strategies for global climate change and has chosen 302 scientists, representing 71 countries, from more than 1200 nominees. The responsibility of Review Editors is to carefully assess all the information submitted and examine every source that is cited, whether the literature originates from scientific journals, books or “grey” publications. Review Editors are required to have a broad understanding of the wider scientific and technical issues being addressed.

This year more than 60% of the experts chosen are new to the IPCC process, bringing with them brand new expertise and perspectives but guided by experienced authors, such as Carol. There was also a 50% increase in nominations from last year, which demonstrates the increased interest in contributing to this prestigious report.

“I am very honoured to have been selected as a Review Editor for the IPCC Working Group II, 5th Assessment Report”, Carol commented, “Having been an Author on the 4th Assessment [that was published in the year that the IPCC won the Nobel Peace Prize], I was pleased to see an increase in ocean coverage and in this new report the marine systems are very well represented. The IPCC Assessment Reports are vital in the gathering and sharing of international research and remain the most credible central source of knowledge about climate change.”

Carol continued: “There are some excellent international experts associated with this report including many that PML already works with on a regular basis. I feel privileged to have been selected alongside such an esteemed group of scientists.”
