Links with China strengthened
25th November 2009
We are proud to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) was agreed between PML, China's National Marine Environment
Monitory Centre (NMEMC) and the United Nations Development Programme
Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF) Yellow Sea Large Marine
Ecosystem Project Management Office (YSLME PMO).
The signing took place in the exhibition area under the watchful
eyes of senior representatives of the governments of China and the
Republic of Korea as well as representatives from UNDP, GEF, the
United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the Yellow Sea
Large Marine Ecosystem (YSLME RGW-P and RWG-E) and the Partnerships
in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA).
This MOU is being entered into by the YSLME PMO, NMEMC and PML
for the purpose of enhancing collaboration, sharing experiences and
knowledge in an ecosystem approach, for the sustainable use and
management of coastal and marine areas and resources, remote
sensing, socio-economics and modelling. This will be in the context
of the activity entitled “Capacity Building Activity for Developing
Ecosystem Model the Bohai and the Yellow Seas Marine Ecosystem” and
will be initiated by a student exchange between PML and NMEMC,
applying the PML European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM)
model to the YSLME. This will in turn benefit the Global Coastal
Ecosystem Modelling System programme, which PML is currently
involved with and for which recent results include the Asian
region.
PML, YSLME PMO and NMEMC are engaged in helping countries build
their capacities in coastal and marine management, and are agreeing
to the MOU to benefit from their experiences and use their
respective networks and capabilities to facilitate identification
of opportunities for collaboration that will lead to more
sustainable use and management of coastal and marine areas and
resources.
PML has been involved with project and
strategic partnerships in the Asian region for over 20
years.
