Congratulations to the IPCC on Nobel Peace Prize award
16th October 2007
Dr Carol Turley, PML senior scientist and a lead IPCC author on
the “Ecosystems, their properties, goods and services” chapter of
the recent 4th Assessment Report of the UN’s Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is delighted with the award of the
Nobel Peace Prize to the IPCC.
News arrived that the IPCC and Al Gore were jointly awarded this
highly prestigious accolade “for their efforts to build up and
disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change and to
lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract
such change"
The IPCC’s Working Group II chapter “Ecosystems, their
properties, goods and services” focuses mainly on the properties,
goods and services of non-intensively managed and unmanaged
ecosystems, their components and their potential vulnerability to
climate change.
Ecosystems provide many goods and services that are of vital
importance for the functioning of the biosphere and provide the
basis for the delivery of tangible benefits to human society (such
as supporting, provisioning, regulating and cultural services).
Dr Turley commented: “This is brilliant news for the recognition
of the importance of climate change in the Earth’s future and to
the role played by the IPCC and the hundreds of contributing
individuals who worked tirelessly to synthesize the large body of
information for use by climate change policymakers so that they
move forward, knowing that sound science is behind their future
mitigation and adaptation strategies. It has been a great honour to
contribute even a small part to this process, by PML enabling me to
dedicate time to it.”
