Colin Breed MP visits PML
28th August 2009
This week
PML’s Chief Executive, Prof. Stephen de Mora, and Dr Mel Austen met
with Shadow Treasury Minister and Liberal Democrat MP for South
East Cornwall, Colin Breed MP.
The visit was initiated by Mr Breed to gain a better understanding
of the general work undertaken at PML and to discover the extent of
the lab’s involvement in the development of the UK’s Marine and
Coastal Access Bill.
Prof. de Mora commented: “It was a pleasure to have the
opportunity to show Mr Breed the varied and timely work at PML as
well as discussing the wider marine issues facing society. It is
important for us to have the support of local MPs, especially in a
region with such strong maritime and marine foundations.
Dr Mel Austen, Head of Science at PML, continued on the visit by
the former member of the environment, food and rural affairs
committee: “It is a critical time in the Marine and Coastal Access
Bill’s development as it makes its way though Parliament. We value
Mr Breed’s interest in gaining a clearer understanding of the
potential impact of the Bill and the role of science in
underpinning its implementation.”
Mr Breed remarked on the visit: “I was delighted to be able to
spend some time at PML discussing the forthcoming Marine Bill and
in particular the impact of PML. I was also impressed with the
research being undertaken, which will be vital to our future policy
on marine resources.”
