Planet Earth podcast: Climate tipping points, basking
sharks, primates
09 January
2013
This week's Planet Earth podcast features
PML scientists Dr Peter Miller and PhD student Kylie Scales. The
podcast focuses on why understanding where plankton
congregates can help us protect basking sharks and other marine
creatures. It also examines how primates planning ahead tells us
about our own intelligence and how to predict dangerous climate
tipping points.
During the podcast Peter and Kylie discuss
the vital role of ocean fronts in terms of nutrient
mixing and plankton blooms. Based on results from satellite
monitoring, scientists have been able to track animals such as
basking sharks through studying the correlation between enhanced
zooplankton abundance in productive frontal zones and the
animals who feed on them.
