PML's photobioreactor, developed through PML ApplicationsTo help deliver its knowledge transfer most effectively, PML has a wholly owned trading subsidiary, PML Applications Ltd, which has been created to engage in activities across a number of industry sectors that include marine biotechnology (from developing and applying biosensors through to identifying and isolating novel compounds from marine organisms), consultancy and research services for the management of estuarine and coastal ecosystems, Earth observing research, applications and products from satellite and airborne remote sensing systems.

The PML Group provides pioneering research, innovative products from applied research and consultancy (including training and capacity building) to a range of clients. Customers include the European Union, UK Government departments (Defra, BERR and MoD), UK Research Councils, the Earth observing industry (British National Space Centre, European Space Agency and NASA), European pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, the environmental safety and management industry and local authority consortia with national regulatory bodies (Natural England and the Environment Agency).

PML Applications Ltd also has spin-out companies and a joint venture company in Norway (BioPartner A.S.), a research-based consulting company operating as an international environmental advisor, providing environmental risk assessments and monitoring for selected clients, e.g. the oil and gas industry in the Arctic and eastern Europe.
