Overview of PML

Overview

The ocean is fundamental to sustaining life on Earth and has a critical role in:

  • controlling climate and influencing weather
  • providing a vital source of food
  • providing a source of abundant renewable energy

but is under threat from global change due to the:

  • climate effects
  • demographic trends
  • habitat degradation.

The coastal zone, which already hosts over 50% of the world’s population, is under increasing pressure. Most of the services (fisheries, oil and gas production, tourism, leisure and trade) are provided by the coastal and shelf ecosystems, which are the main focus of PML’s research.

PML has been conducting research for over 30 years, leading on programmes and working with partners nationally and internationally. PML’s customers include government departments, the European Union, the Research Councils and industry. For further detail on PML’s research programme and its specific science areas, please click here.

More applied and commercial research is undertaken by PML’s trading subsidiary, PML Applications Ltd., created to work with customers in activities across a number of industry sectors concerned with understanding, managing and protecting the marine environment.
